Protect the rider and be visible

A correctly fitted helmet meeting applicable local requirements is a basic decision. Lights, reflective material and predictable riding behavior can help others see you, especially when weather or daylight changes during the ride.

Check front and rear lighting regulations and ensure lights aren't hidden behind cargo. If you ride in rain, consider clothing and accessories that help maintain visibility and grip.

Secure the expensive parts

E-bikes are valuable and often heavy. Plan to lock the frame to appropriate fixed infrastructure with equipment suited to your area. Removable battery and display policies vary; follow maker guidance for their removal and storage.

Insurance or registration for bicycle theft may be worth reviewing, especially if the bike substitutes for commuting transport. Avoid accessories that interfere with steering or the brake cables.

Carry items in a stable way

Panniers, baskets and compatible racks can keep your back cooler and reduce swinging loads. Check rack weight limits and attachment compatibility. Do not hang heavy shopping bags from handlebars, which may affect control.

A pump, tire repair method appropriate to the model and basic hand tools can be useful; for unfamiliar motor or battery faults, use trained service rather than improvising electrical work.

Prepare for the imperfect day

A backup route, charging plan, rain layer and realistic arrival schedule can matter more than higher theoretical motor output. Track consumables such as pads, tires and chains because commute reliability depends on routine checks.

Build a small kit tailored to your riding environment; don't buy every accessory on day one. Add equipment after real use reveals where the gaps are.

Before you decide

  • Helmet and lighting suit my riding conditions.
  • My lock secures the frame properly.
  • Bags and racks are rated for their intended loads.
  • I have a basic tire and maintenance plan.
